Over the River and Through the Woods —Door Design Can you see the forest and the trees? As you travel to your upcoming holiday destinations, enjoy the scenery and celebrate the bounty of NC’s forests and river systems in a dramatic design for a front door. Designers should incorporate natural elements that evoke thoughts of lush forests and sparkling streams, while also celebrating the upcoming holiday season. No artificial or synthetic materials other than foams and adhesives should be used. To Grandmother’s House We Go —Surprise Package From brightly polished silver to the most scrumptious sweet potato pie, Grandmother’s holiday table is a feast for the senses. Designers are to create a centerpiece worthy of taking center stage at Grandma’s. The design may be as literal or interpretative as the designer wishes, incorporating traditional centerpiece themes or employing vegetative elements, family photos, china, silver or kitchen items in the design. Ready for a Close-up — Bridal Elizabeth Taylor is getting married again and she needs a bouquet! Create a design worthy of a stroll down the red carpet. Channel Hollywood glitz and glamour with the inclusion of at least one fabric, jewelry or metallic element. bouquet worthy for a matinee idol, whether it is Elizabeth Taylor’s 10th turn as a bride or a young starlet’s first. Hollywood glitz and glamour are the perfect inspiration for a bridal bouquet ready for a close-up. A Life Inspired — Sympathy Who has inspired you in life? A parent, a teacher, a friend. Designers are challenged to create an original sympathy design celebrating the inspiration of a loved one who has passed. The design may be as traditional or “out-of-the-box” as the designer wishes, but it must clearly create a story about a person inspirational in his/her life. Designers should include a brief written description of the person who inspired the design which will be displayed with the arrangement. North Carolina the Boo-tiful — NC Products Blackbeard’s Ghost. The Maco Light. The Phantom Train Wreck. Specters, ghosts, and goblins abound in the Old North State fueled by the talents of Southern storytellers and our own desire to believe in the unbelievable. Designers must create a design incorporating themes from NC’s spookiest stories while also paying homage to our state’s rich folklore. Books, photographs, maps, and souvenir items can play a key role in the design or the designer may take a more interpretative approach.
Hints for Blue Ribbon Seekers 1. Do not use any artificial items ... no silk, only natural and fresh produce can be used. 2. Check your mechanics ... the judges might pick your entry up. 3. If you use fresh fruit/vegetables please use “Fruit Fresh”. 4. Please limit the size of your design. We have limited display space. 5. Remember your designs will be displayed on pedestals, tables, or easels. Please keep in mind your height, width, and weigh of the design. The door piece will be displayed on the wall area. Logistics
If you do not want to take your entry to the State Fair, Cleveland’s will shuttle your design to the State Fair Grounds. Simply drop it off along with completed entry form to Cleveland’s anytime the day before show date or before 12:00 noon on the day of the show. (example: First show date is Wednesday, October 15, therefore you must drop off your design at Cleveland’s anytime Wednesday before noon.
Judging will take place the evenings of October 15, 20, 23. After these dates, your design will be returned to Cleveland’s for you to pick up. |
